Sailing as Privateer

My memory has a habit of matching different matters and occasions to existing songs. This is how it works a lot better and this is how I learn. Then I can also picture things.
If you’re talking maritime, I’m talking sailing! Immediately this song comes to mind. It was popular on the radio when I was six years old and my dad had recorded this on his tape recorder. We all used to listen to it on Sundays. It taught me that the Dutch are a proud seafarers' nation.
I really thought it was a magnificent song. Tough bearded men on boats who battle the elements and who knows what else. Later on I read  “Suske and Wiske”  (Bob and Bobette, Kingdom of the Sea Snails ) a Flemish comic that was and still is very popular in the Netherlands. Parts of the songlyrics and the names appeared in the story.
Folksong
As a matter of fact, the song is a lot older since it is a folksong. The oldest written version of it dates from 1903 but because folksongs are delivered by oral tradition they are much older than that.
The band Fungus scored a hitsong in 1974 (it reached no. 28 in the charts) and also the Dutch Celtic folkrockband Rapalje recorded it. Even Germany had bands that recorded their own version of this old Dutch folksong.

Sailing as Privateer (Fungus Version)
All (those) who want to be privateers
Have to be bearded (men)
"John, Pete, George and Corneel
They've got beards, they've got beards
" John, Pete, George and Corneel
They've got beards, they've got beards

All those who eat rancid biscuit
Have to be bearded (men)
"John, Pete, George and Corneel
They've got beards, they've got beards
John, Pete, George and Corneel
They've got beards, they sail along"

All those who smother fancy pipes
Have to be bearded (men)
John, Pete, George and Corneel
They've got beards, they've got beards
John, Pete, George and Corneel
They've got beards, they sail along"

All those who kill the walrus with us
Have to be bearded (men)
John, Pete, George and Corneel
They've got beards, they've got beards
John, Pete, George and Corneel
They've got beards, they sail along

All those who don't dread death nor devil
Have to be bearded (men)
John, Pete, George and Corneel
They've got beards, they've got beards
John, Pete, George and Corneel
They've got beards, they sail along

All those who want to sail as privateers
Have to be bearded (men)
"John, Pete, George and Corneel
They've got beards, they've got beards
"John, Pete, George and Corneel
They've got beards, they sail along
They've got beards, they've got beards (3x)
