MaSS website 2.0

Monday, January 21, 2019 - 11:45

Our website Maritime Stepping Stones (MaSS) has been improved! Check it out at: https://mass.maritime-heritage.com

The most important improvement is that it is now possible to register for an account, after which you can make adjustments, add images or even add complete sites. With these improvements we can tell the stories about our shipwrecks better and now everyone can help us do that! See below for a list of improvements in MaSS v2.0:

- Visitors can register themselves as a user
Visitors to the website can register themselves as users. Registering and logging in can take place as a separate action, but also as part of making a contribution.

- Mark site as a favorite
The visitor to MaSS will be given the option to mark sites as a favorite. With this they can compile a list of favorites.

- Forum
MaSS will offer registered visitors the opportunity to ask questions and discuss a site. The questions / discussions can be read per site. In addition, there is a chronological overview of all questions and discussions.

- Email notifications
Registered users can subscribe to e-mail notifications for the following events:
- New site published in MaSS.
- New question / discussion.
- Reaction on own forum contribution.

- Add new site
Registered users are given the opportunity to enter a new site. The new site only becomes public after the editors have verified the information.

- Upload photos
Registered users can contribute to the information about a site by uploading photos. These photos must be verified by the editors and inserted in the correct place in the information.

- Personal overview of contributions
Registered users can request an overview of all contributions that they have added to MaSS.

- Manage themes
Through the content management system (cms) of MaSS, editors can add new themes and change existing themes. A theme consists of a preset of filters (with which a selection of sites is made), the position and zoom factor of the map, a theme name and a photo. Let us know if you are missing any themes!

- List view
Via the 'toggle' buttons on the right side of the screen you can switch between the standard map view and a list view.

All filters also work in the list view. The list of favourites has now also been designed as the list view.

- API documentation
The documentation of the API is included in the [i] menu of the website.

The API documentation itself is only available in English.

- New type of site
A new type of site is added: 'Plane wreck'. For this type, an icon has been created for display on the public website.
- New feature: Nationality
The (original) nationality of the ship can now be specified for each site. The official UN list of country names is used as a list of possible answers. Visitors to MaSS can then filter the sites according to nationality. If so desired, the themes can also be filtered according to nationality.
- New feature: Owner
The (original) owner of the ship can now be specified for each site. The official UN list of country names is used as a list of possible answers. Visitors to MaSS can then filter the sites according to owner. If so desired, the themes can also be filtered according to owner.

Visible are the new type of site 'Plane wreck' and the 'Country of origin' and 'Owner' features.

- Quick menu for grouped sites
By default, the map zooms in when you click on a cluster of sites (indicated by a number in the circle). If there are 4 or fewer sites in the cluster, a pop-up menu will appear with which you can quickly click on one of the sites.

- Point location by clicking
Currently, the point on the map must be dragged to change the location of a site. It is now possible to designate a location by clicking on the map.

- Insert Sketchfab models
It is now possible to insert Sketchfab models into the information about a site. This is similar to the way a video is inserted.

- Automatic referral
If the internet address of a site changes, MaSS will automatically redirect the visitor to the new address.
